Teen Texting Valentine Card

Happy Valentine's Day to all my family and friends!

I have had so much fun making Valentine cards this year. I love the hearts and flowers that come with this season.

I made this card for Mo's Challenge #260 - Anything Goes. The only rule is that you have to use a digital stamp from Mo's Digital Pencil.

I used the following supplies to make this card;
1. A blank 5" by 7" blank kraft greeting card.
2. Background patterned paper - "Vintage Charm" from Ki Memories. I distressed the edges of the paper with my scissors.
3. The digital stamp "Janny Texting" from Mo's Digital Pencil. I love the way this girl is sitting on a stack of books while texting on her phone!
4. Copic sketch markers.
5. A Spellbinder's die and Grand Calibur to cut shape around the image.
5. A sentiment from Tim Holtz's "Small Talk" collection.
6. A piece of distressed linen yarn to tie around the card.
7. Tiny pink glitter heart stickers.

Valerie in Love Valentine Card

Love is in the air and Valentine's Day is right around the corner.

This is my first handmade Valentine of the season. I will enter it in Mo's Challenge #246.

This is how I made the card:
I started with a blank 5" by 7" kraft greeting card.

The background paper is from a paper pad by My Mind's Eye;  Lost and Found/Heirloom. This pad has lots of pretty pink patterned paper and is just right for a Valentine card.

I used the digital stamp Valerie in Love from Mo's Digital Pencil. I colored the image with Copic Sketch markers. I then cut/embossed the shape with a Spellbinders die. I attached the image to the center of the card.

I stamped the sentiment "I Love You" and heat embossed it on a piece of coordinating paper from the paper pad. I cut and dry embossed it with a Spellbinders die. I then attached it to the card under the colored image.

I embellished the card with a piece of red raffia ribbon.

Thank you for taking a look at my card. Please share your thoughts in the Comments Section below.

Kindle Books For Kids: Emily's Valentine by Elizabeth Purcell

Emily's Valentine

Author: Elizabeth Purcell
Illustrator: Alex Ferri Land

Publisher: Amazon Digital Services

Date: January 26, 2013

A Handmade Valentine
Little Emily makes a handmade Valentine card for her mommy, daddy and grandpa. She wants to buy her beloved Granny Boo a gift but she does not have enough money in her piggy bank.

Emily makes a beautiful handmade Valentine for her granny and signs it "From Emily with love."

On Valentine's Day, Emily and all her cousins go to visit Granny Boo and give her their gifts. The cousins laugh at Emily's handmade Valentine, but Granny Boo likes the handmade card the best.

Emily gave the gift of love...the greatest gift of all.

My Thoughts
This is a short and sweet rhyming story about a little girl and a handmade Valentine card. I have been making handmade cards for several years so this story is near and dear to my heart.

The lesson in this story is that it is the feelings behind the gift that counts. You don't need to spend money to express your love to those near you. A small handmade item means more than an expensive gift purchased with little thought or emotion.

I read this ebook on my Kindle Fire and found the formatting appropriate for young readers. There is a small color illustration and four lines of rhyming text on each screen view.

This is a wonderful story for Valentine's Day or any day. Highly recommended!

My Rating: 5 Stars Out Of 5

Girl With A Sign Valentine

Valentine's day will be here next week.  I am busy making Valentine cards for all my favorite people.

I will enter this card in Mo's Challenge #170 - Laces and Ribbons. The card must be embellished with lace or ribbon...and use a digital stamp from Mo's Digital Pencil.

This is how I made the card;
(1.) I started with a blank kraft card that measures 4" by 5 1/2".
(2.) I used a piece of red hearts Holographic paper from Recollections for the background. This shiny paper is so pretty.
(3.) I used the digital image "Girl With Sign" from Mo's Digital Pencil Shop. I colored the image with Copic sketch markers. I used a cling rubber stamp from the Tim Holtz "Heartfelt" set to print the sentiment on the sign.
(4.) I lightly distressed the edges of the colored image and mounted it on black and pink cardstock.
(5.) I embellished the card with a piece of "Love" ribbon and two rose stickers.

Happy Scarecrow Greeting Card

I love the characters from "The Wizard of Oz". This is the Scarecrow who was looking for a brain. I gave this card a vintage/distressed look to match the scarecrow's raggedy clothes.

I am entering this card in Mo's Challenge #122 ~ "My Sentiments Exactly".

This is how I made the card:
(1.) I used a pre-made card from kraft cardstock for the base. The card measured 5" by 6 1/2".
(2.) I cut a piece of Tim Holtz distressed cardstock for the background.
(3.) I cut and dry embossed a piece of blue Tim Holtz cardstock with a Spellbinders "Lacey Circles" die and my Cuddlebug.
(4.) I used the Scarecrow digital stamp from Mo's Digital Pencil Store. I cut out the image and colored it with Copic sketch markers. I attached the image to the circle and put it on the card.
(5.) I used a purchased sticker "My honey" for the sentiment.
(6.) I punched three paper buttons from the cardstock that I used for the background of the card. I used twine in the center of the buttons and attached them to the card with glue dots.
(7.) I punched three hearts from the cardstock and put red heart stickers in the centers.
(8.) I attached two pink heart brads on the card.

I gave this card to "My Honey" on Valentine's Day.

Kindle Books for Kids: A Lovely Day

Happy Valentine's Day to all my family, friends and loyal readers! Love is in the air and this is a special day for lovers everywhere.

I recently read "A Lovely Day; A Valentine Picture Book for Children" by Sujatha Lalgudi. This is a story about a young boy who finds a perfect Valentine's Day gift for each member of his family.

About The Author
Sujatha Lalgudi was born in Bangalore and holds a Masters Degree in Computers. After working for several years in the Silicon Valley, she moved back to India. She is currently residing in Mysore, a heritage city. She and her husband Raghavendra Mocharla run and operate www.yumdeal.com and www.hippidoo.com.
Both her children, daughter aged 8 and son aged 3 love books. All her books pass through their test first :-)
Sujatha Lalgudi has written many ebooks for children. They are all available on the Amazon Kindle.

Valentine's Day
This is a very simple ebook for children that features a young boy and his family. Each page of the book shows him presenting a different family member or friend a Valentine's Day gift.

The boy gives his mommie a bouquet of red roses, his daddy some tasty cupcakes and his best friend a bunch of balloons. He gives his dog a special bone and his cat a cozy blanket. He presents his "Valentine" with a big red paper heart!

The story ends with a picture of the boy and his parents embracing and looking very happy ~ "lots of kisses, loads of hugs, all for me!"

My Thoughts
This 13-page ebook is a short and sweet story for young boys and girls. Each page includes a full-page color illustration and one sentence of text. The text is written above or below the illustration in big print.

I read this book on my Kindle 3 (black and white illustrations) and my Kindle for PC application (color illustrations). I enjoyed the pictures and text on the small screen of my Kindle. The formatting is very good and I did not have any problem reading the text.

The color illustrations are very expressive and truly convey the joy of giving that the boy experienced as he gave gifts to his family and friends. I love the way this book emphasizes the spirit of generosity. The gifts were all inexpensive and many of them were homemade.

The last page of the story is so sweet. It shows that the boy received the very best gift of all ~ Hugs and kisses from his loved ones.

I think this is an excellent story to share with young children on Valentine's Day. Highly recommended!

My Rating:  5 stars out of 5

FYI ~ I ordered this book from Amazon.Com when it was offered as a free download. Please check the price before ordering.

Handmade Collage Valentine Card

Love is in the air and Valentines Day is just around the corner. I have been busy making handmade Valentines cards for some of my family members.

This is a collage. A collage may include newspaper clippings, ribbons, bits of colored or hand-made papers, portions of other artwork or texts, photographs and other found objects, glued to a piece of paper or canvas.
You do not have to be an artist to create a collage. You just have to have a good imagination and a collection of ephemera that could be used for your project.

I hope this will inspire you to create an original card for your sweetheart on Valentines Day.

This is how I made my Valentine collage;
  • I started with a blank greeting card that measures 4 1/2" by 5 1/2". The card is red on the outside and white on the inside. I used a Martha Stewart Punch (Cherish) to punch the front edge of the card.
  • I cut a 3 1/2" heart from a piece of patterned paper with foil hearts and from an old Bingo playing card. If you don't have scrapbooking paper, you could use a piece of pretty wrapping paper or a page from an old book.
  • I found this picture of a Victorian girl in my scrapbooking stash. You could use a real photo that you sized to fit the card or a photo from a book/magazine.
  • I punched a 1" heart from felt and placed it at the top of the Bingo card heart.
  • I used a Martha Stewart button punch to make a button from a Bingo card. I put a red glitter heart in the center of the button punch. You could use a real button or a favorite sticker.
  • The ticket "Adore" is from a package of Tim Holtz embellishments. You could use the text from an old greeting card or a handwritten note.
  • I embellished the card with 3 pink butterflies that I punched with a Martha Stewart punch. I added some glitter and attached them to the card with glue dots. I added a small heart sticker to the side of the card.
There is no limit to the creative cards you can make with old paper, fabric, lace and embellishment that you probably have in your home. It is time to reuse, recycle and upcycle some of the items that might end up in your trash bin.

Happy creating!

Showing Love and Hospitality To Others

I would like to share this guest post by Roxanne Packham, author of "Inspired Design".  This article will inspire you to reach out to others in a spirit of caring, sharing and love.

Before we are inspired about how to show love to others, we must first ask why?

Quite simply it is because in Romans 12:10 & 13 we are told to be devoted to one another in brotherly love, to honor one another above ourselves. We are also told to share with God’s people who are in need and to practice hospitality. Notice the vocabulary: practice, not perfect.

In America, as a culture and as individuals, we are suffering in part because popular media gears everything to perfection. We are bombarded with messages that if we aren’t the very best at something, we just shouldn’t bother. We compare ourselves to others, rather than knowing our worth in God’s eyes.

I suffer from insecurity and wonder if I can be creative enough to inspire. Are my tips original? Are the photographs beautiful enough? Are my suggestions too simple for some, but too fancy for another? The problem: my thoughts revolve completely around me. My creativity, my skills, my ability. This is not about me but about God’s purpose for me. I suddenly realize the bigger picture; I can’t do it, but I can through Christ who strengthens me.

This dance in my mind between my preciousness in His sight and the enemy’s interjections has slowed me down at times, but God showed me this dance is the very reason for us to love others; to encourage each other. Because we are human we suffer from doubt, insecurity, and rejection of one sort or another. We are God’s tool to encourage others. God uses us as His hands to love others, but make no mistake it is His power, His grace and the Holy Spirit that do the real work, not ours.

God’s path of creativity in me began with a family history of silversmithing eight generations back, a degree from USC, design school in Paris, then design school in Los Angeles. Call them spiritual or otherwise, but they were the gifts God saw fit to give to me. Who am I to argue with my Creator? They are unique and I celebrate them. What are your magnificent and unique gifts that you can use to inspire others?

I do not want the gifts received as a blessing from God to “turn into spiritual dry rot,” as Ann Voscamp suggests in her book One Thousand Gifts, as the manna did when it was hoarded in Exodus 16:20. I want to use my blessings.

Inadequacies and all, imperfections and all: I want to inspire others to practice Hospitality and to LOVE others.

Creative Ways to Encourage Others on Valentine’s Day

KIND WORDS
A handwritten note with quotes, scriptures and words of encouragement is a wonderful thing to find in the mailbox.
Leave a sticky note on your child/husband’s pillow or be bold and write your note on the bathroom mirror or car window in red lipstick saying “I love you”.
Even an email just to say “thank you for your hard work, you bless me” can make a person’s day. A cute poem, scripture or old photograph will remind them they are remembered.
If someone has lost a loved one, kind words of some way that loved one inspired you to do something better will let them know that their loved one’s legacy is living on.

AN INVITATION, TIME
Take some time out of your days to meet someone for coffee, lunch, a long walk, or even just leave a phone message with a sweet sentiment. If you have more time, take a picnic basket to their home. Set up a lunch, tea or coffee, with all your tea cups and a candle. It is a lovely surprise! Just rinse when you finish and pack back up so they don’t even have to do dishes. They will have a lovely memory of a special time.

THOUGHTFUL GESTURE
Hang flowers on the front door handle, leave a pretty tiny package in the mailbox with a beautiful red bow, or cookies delivered to the front door. Create a breakfast plate for your child that says you are special . This is especially significant if your child has struggled with something recently.

A BEAUTIFUL DINNER
Of course this takes more time, but try for a beautiful table setting complete with candles, fresh greens or flowers and a lovely menu either handwritten or printed out on your computer. Don’t concentrate on the gourmet or complicated quality of the meal: remember it is about relationship and encouragement!

VALENTINE’S DINNER
A beautiful table for Valentine’s simply consists of reds, pinks and perhaps some purple. (Although it could be beautiful in all white too.) Of course, it has to have some hearts and some colorful candles. Leave kind words of some sort on each place setting. Every Valentine’s table should have its share of sparkle, of course!

Somebody Loves You, Mr. Hatch

During my years of working as a school librarian, I read thousands of children's picture books.  This is one of my very favorite read-aloud books.  It just happens to be about Valentine's Day.  Somebody Loves You, Mr. Hatch (paperback), by Eileen Spinelli, truly illustrates the power of love.
"Mr Hatch was tall and thin and he did not smile. Every morning at 6:30 sharp he would leave his brick house and walk eight blocks to the shoelace factory where he worked. At lunchtime he would sit alone in a corner, eat his cheese and mustard sandwich, and drink a cup of coffee. Sometimes he brought a prune for dessert." So begins the story of Mr Hatch, a lonely, quiet man that no one really ever noticed. That is, until the day the big box arrived in the mail. Mr Hatch had never received a package before. He excitedly ripped open the wrapping to find a large heart-shaped box filled with candy, and a special note that said, "Somebody loves you." "And then he did something he had never done before: He laughed. He laughed and danced and clapped his hands." He went out for a walk and met and helped his neighbors. He brought his big heart-shaped box to work and shared it with all his co-workers. He baked brownies and made lemonade and had a big party for all the neighborhood children in his backyard and played his harmonica. Mr Hatch bloomed! But all his newfound joy was about to end when the embarrassed postman knocked at the door.....The package had been delivered to the wrong address! But by this time he has made many new friends who care very much and inspire him with the message that somebody does love him after all!
We all know Mr. Hatch--he's that grumpy old man down the street or the weird guy who catches the bus on the corner. Not only do we know him, but odds are, we have all felt like a Mr. Hatch at some point in our lives--slightly outcast, a little unloved or forgotten. What we discover is that although Mr. Hatch WAS unloved and forgotten, it was truly his own behaviour that isolated him from his world. For the Hatch in us, we learn the power of positive action; for the side of us that looks at the Hatches of the world and judges, it's a reminder that we don't really know them, and that simple acts of kindness can mean so very much. The impact of kind gestures, accidental or intentional, have far-reaching ripple effects.
This book is a wonderful story to share with children of all ages.  It has been used by pastors to inspire their congregations to reach out to the unloved and unlovely.  It's message is appropriate on Valentine's Day and everyday.

Happy Valentine's Day, Sweet Babboo!

Valentine's Day will soon be here and Sally is eagerly waiting for a valentine from Linus, her "Sweet Babboo."  Sally is in LOVE.  Unfortunately, Linus does not feel the same way about Sally.  When Valentine's Day arrives, Sally is heart-broken.  She is furious with Linus for not sending her a gift or a card.  Sally is so upset that she convinces her older brother, Charlie Brown, to go find Linus and punch him in the nose!
Linus explains to Charlie Brown that he was not Sally's "Sweet Babboo" and that he never planned to send her a valentine.  It was all in her imagination.  It seems like things never turn out as planned when Charlie Brown gets involved.  This story has a hilarious surprise ending that children will love.
I believe parents and teachers could use this book to discuss some very important issues with children.  Here are some questions that you could use with the story;
  • Does anyone call you by a special nickname or term of endearment?  What does this mean to you?
  • Was Sally really in love with Linus?  How do people treat each other when they are really in love?
  • How did Sally react when she did not receive a valentine from Linus?  Is this the correct way to respond to disappointment?
  • Do you think Charlie Brown should have gotten involved in this situation?
  • Why did Charlie Brown want to avoid hitting Linus?
  • How would Sally react if she found out that Charlie Brown did not punch Linus in the nose?
  • What happened when Charlie Brown tried to do the right thing?
This is not a new book.  It has a 1997 copyright date and I found this hardback copy in a thrift shop.  I think children will always love Charlie Brown and the Peanuts gang.  This book is a Valentine's Day winner!

One Month Until Valentine's Day

Today is Friday and it is time to have some fun.  Valentine's Day is one month from today so I made my first handmade Valentine's Day card this morning.
Here is how I made the card;
(1)  I used a pre-made cardstock card that measures 4 1/2" by 5 1/2".  The card is red on the outside and white on the inside.  I bought a box of 50 of these cards for just $4.00 at Michaels.  They were on the Christmas clearance shelf.
(2) The side of the card was punched with the Martha Stewart "Cherish" punch.
(3) The image is "Jack Waiting" from Mo's Digital Pencil Shop.  I colored the image with Prismacolor pencils.  I put a heart-shaped brad in the upper left corner of the image (Bradletz by Provo Craft).
(4) I used a white paper lace doily for the background. (Hobby Lobby)
(5) I made a large heart and punched a scalloped circle from "Recollections Basics" patterned paper.
(6) I used a "valentine" sticker from a package of stickers that I found at Big Lots.  The postage stamp embellishment is from Martha Stewart.
(7) I added a sheer ribbon bow to finish the card.

I am entering this card in the following challenges;
Mo's Digital Challenge ~ Playtime
365 Cards ~ On Edge

I hope this post will inspire you to get out your craft supplies and start making some handmade valentines!
