Social Media Explained: Untangling the World’s Most Misunderstood Business Trend, Revised and Expanded Second Edition

Author: Mark W. Schaefer

Publisher: Amazon Digital Services LLC

Date of Publication: February 7, 2018

Length: 143 Pages

About the Author
Mark W. Schaefer is a globally-recognized speaker, educator, business consultant, and author who blogs at {grow} - one of the top marketing blogs of the world.

Social Media - An Unstoppable Force
Mark Schaefer believes the potential for marketing through social media platforms is a significant and unstoppable force.

The author explains that behind every social media marketing success story, you will find the following three elements:
  1. Targeted connections +
  2. Meaningful content +
  3. Authentic Helpfulness = BUSINESS BENEFITS
This updated book offers business leaders solid strategies and case studies for implementing, managing and measuring a social media marketing program.

My Thoughts
Social media marketing requires more expertise in marketing than social media. Do not assign Tammy from the mail room to run your new social media effort because she's good at Facebook.
I had to smile when I read the above quote, but the author makes a very valid point. Social media offers platforms to promote and market your business. You are always marketing.

How do you handle complaints and criticism on social media?
"Deal with it. Adjust. Adapt. Get your house in order because the social web will make you miserable if you don't."
This book spells out exactly what you need to do to establish a successful social media marketing program for your business. I found the social media marketing case study in Chapter 11 extremely interesting and inspiring.

"Social Media explained" is recommended for social media newbies as well as experienced professionals. Mark Schaefer is a natural teacher and he EXPLAINS some advanced strategies and techniques in an understandable manner. I am confident you will find value in this book. Read the book and then go back and really study it.

MY RATING: 5 STARS OUT OF 5

Book Review: Mindsharing by Lior Zoref

ONE WORD BOOK REVIEW: NETWORKS

Title: Mindsharing: The Art of Crowdsourcing Everything

Author: Lior Zoref

Publisher: Penguin Random House LLC

Publication Date: April 28, 2015

Length: 272 Pages

About The Author
Lior Zoref is a crowd wisdom researcher, an international speaker, former Microsoft executive and private consultant for crowdsourcing and digital strategy.

Are You Alone?
Decision-making can be very difficult. It is especially difficult when our health, finances, career or relationship is involved. In this book, Mr. Zoref explains how we can find advice and wisdom from our social networks. He believes "mindsharing" is a simple way to use the tools and technology already in place to access and share our greatest human resources....one another.

"We are stronger than me". This is the theme of "Mindsharing" and Mr. Zoref instructs the reader on the most effective ways and places to use social networks to educate, involve and enrich ourselves and our online contacts.

My Thoughts
When I first heard about this book, I thought it might be about the popular practice of "crowd sourcing" to finance creative projects. This book is SO MUCH MORE than getting financial contributions from your social networks.

Mr. Zoref goes into great detail in sharing how mindsharing has played a tremendous part in his life since he left Microsoft. Many of his life dreams have come true as a direct result of mindsharing

An amazing example of mindsharing in the author's life happened when he was suffering from a persistent cough. He went to five different doctors but could not get an accurate diagnosis or relief from the cough. He finally went to his "crowd" on Facebook and described his systems. After two hours, he had many different replies to his request for advice. He found it interesting that eleven of his Facebook friends suggested that it might be whooping cough. He went back to his doctor and insisted that they test him for whooping cough. The diagnosis was clear: whooping cough.

This book is an excellent educational tool to build or improve your social network. Highly Recommended!

My Rating - 5 STARS OUT OF 5

FYI ~ I received a print copy of this book from the author's publicist to read and review.

Author: Melissa Taylor

Publisher: Amazon Digital Services

About The Author
A mother of two girls, a freelance writer and blogger, and an award-winning educator, Melissa Taylor holds a Master's Degree in Global Education, with expertise in early childhood and elementary education and a focus on literacy and play. She has taught all subjects for the elementary grades and preschool.

Pinterest For Business and Fun
Have you considered the benefits Pinterest offers your brand, your business, your blog, or even your personal coolness factor?

Here are some facts that might impress you;
  • Pinterest is the FASTEST growing social media network.
  • Pinterest has 23 million users.
  • The Pinterest referral traffic beats Google+, YouTube and LinkedIn combined.
Melissa Taylor uses Pinterest as an online bulletin board and filing system. She has created boards for her business and personal interests and saved links to webpages that she wants to keep.

You pin interesting photographs or graphics that represent the content you want to save.

What do you pin? Here are some of the author's favorite things to pin;
  • Learning ideas for kids
  • Recipes
  • Crafts and DIY projects
  • Children's books
  • Inspirational Quotes
How do you get followers on Pinterest?
Ms. Taylor offers the following tips for getting followers.
  • Connect to your Twitter and/or Facebook accounts.
  • Name your boards with keywords that others might find interesting.
  • Make a board dedicated to your business only. You can then repin posts from your business board to your special interest boards.
  • Pinterest uses hashtags the same way Twitter does. Use hashtags in your descriptions before a category word like #education or #travel.
  • Repin, Like and Comment on other user's pins.
  • Follow people who pin items that interest you.
  • Set up a pinning schedule for each day.
The author shares "Best Advice from Top Pinners" and "Interesting Pinners to Follow" at the end of her book.

My Thoughts
This book was a fast read and filled with color screenshots and links. I have read several books about Pinterest but this one really has me excited about setting up boards and pinning.

I currently pin my blog posts and have noticed that I am getting traffic to my blog from the Pinterest links. My goal for the future is to use Pinterest as a virtual filing system that reflects all my interests and passions. You can designate your boards as "private" if you don't want others to see them.

Pinterest Savvy provides basic information about using Pinterest and explains exactly WHY you need to use it. The links are excellent for finding avid pinners to follow and getting a feel for how to use the site. The author shares many tips from the book on her Pinterest Savy website.

If you are looking for Pinterest "how-to" and inspiration, this is the book for you!

Guest Blog Post: Christopher Smith on Social Media Marketing

I would like to welcome guest blogger Christopher Smith to JanetteFuller.Com. Mr. Smith is a Social Media Marketing Specialist. He is passionate about using Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and YouTube to help online entrepreneurs network and build a brand that will be rewarding and profitable.

Simply do a Google search on “Social Media” or “Social Websites” and your computer may blow up from all of the links that will show up. Depending upon which source you consider, there are around 100 global social media websites with a large number of unique visitors. These range from Facebook with approximately 908,000,000 registered global users to lesser known websites like Nexopia that caters to Canadians and has over 1,000,000 active users. I’ve had the blessing of being able to utilize Social Media to generate a substantial second income from home. Here are my thoughts on Facebook and LinkedIn.

Facebook
Facebook by far is the largest global social media website. Facebook is great for cultivating personal relationships. You can reconnect with friends from grade school. You are able to get in touch with family members that you see every few years. I’ve been able to re-connect with friends that I’ve lost touch with over 15 years ago. Most of my family is a 10 hour car ride away. It is great to see baby pictures of new additions to our clan before they turn three years old. Most people get a card or two on their birthday. When your birthday shows up, your Facebook profile will explode with birthday wishes. Facebook is great for building relationships and building your personal “brand” but not the best choice to market products or services. Share your vacation pictures but not your investment ideas on Facebook.

LinkedIn
LinkedIn is considered by many to be the best professional social media website. In my opinion, LinkedIn is a combination of an online head-hunter, a chatty friend and a potential boss. People literally make professional connections on LinkedIn that result in employment and / or contracted work. You are encouraged to network with your personal connections and even make introductions between your connections. LinkedIn makes it super easy to target a search to locate a professional.  Hypothetically speaking, you could find a basket weaver with a four year degree living in Mystery, Alaska. If he or she didn’t exist, LinkedIn would show you other basket weavers in this general area. LinkedIn is great for making professional connections, developing potential business relationships (partners, contacts, professional networks, etc.) and building your personal “brand.” You will not want to share your vacation pictures here but maybe offer to show others how you were able to go on vacation from your business venture.

About Christopher Smith
Christopher Smith is a Social Media Specialist and Online Auction Coach / Mentor. Between his Twitter accounts, eBay accounts, LinkedIn account,  professional / personal Facebook pages and Youtube Channel, he reaches thousands of people each day.

Book Review: Eat the Rhino; Business Idea to Business Plan in 30 Bites

By Peter and Roberta Budvietas

Smashwords, 2012

ISBN: 978-0-9864587-8-1

About the Authors
Peter and Roberta Budvietas have studied, taught and written about business for over 30 years. They currently manage Budvietas.com Ltd where they offer mentoring and support for business start up and who need focus to grow.

So You Want To Set Up A Business
This book contains the information you need to go from idea for a business to being ready to start doing business. The goal of this book is to bring you to the point where you make the final decision to commit to opening your own business.

Eat The Rhino?
There is an old saying that goes, "How do you eat an elephant?"
The Answer: "One bite at a time."

The authors believe that many people charge in like a rhino when they open a business. The business owners do not have the information or resources they need to operate a successful business.

This book is organized into "30 bites" of useful information for starting a business. Each "bite" is divided into the following parts;
  • Take a bite - a brief introduction of this section.
  • Chew the bite - exercises and detailed information to think about.
  • Savor the bite - implementing the information you discovered in the exercises.
  • Digest the bite - a summary of the bite.
Each bite starts with something general, moves to a specific application of the concept and finishes with a summary.

My Thoughts
This ebook is an excellent choice for entrepreneurs who want to get their business started on the right foot. Preparation is the key to success and this book provides a wealth of information and resources.

I do not have a business background or education, so I can't evaluate the information in this book in a professional manner. I was very impressed with the amount of detail that the authors spent on the financial aspects of setting up and running a business. Many business books that I have read only touch on these subjects and refer you to an accountant or financial professional.

If you read this book and complete all the exercises that are detailed in the text, I think you will be well on the road to business success. After reading this ebook, I feel like I have completed a college course on entrepreneurship. The authors have many years of business experience and are very generous in the amount of instruction that they provide in this book.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is thinking about starting or buying a business.  The exercises in this book will help you determine if entrepreneurship is right for you. If you decide to move forward with your business endeavor, this book offers excellent instruction for doing it right.

My Rating:  5 Stars Out Of 5

FYI ~ Roberta Budvietas sent me a complimentary digital copy of this book to read and review. Thank you!

Book Review: Quick and Easy Guide to Branding Your Business and Creating Massive Sales With Pinterest

Pinterest is a social networking site that allows users to create photo collections online. It is primarily a photo sharing website where the members are allowed to create albums pertaining to a certain theme or pattern.

"The Quick and Easy Guide to Branding Your Business and Creating Massive Sales With Pinterest", by Kim Garst, is a guide for using Pinterest to strengthen your business and brand.

About the Author
Kim Garst is a mompreneur, social media and personal branding strategist, speaker, coach and trainer. She was recently named by Forbes as one of the top 50 social media influencers.

The New Kid on the Block
Pinterest has become one of the leading social media networks. The site was founded in early 2010 and has grown by leaps and bounds. At present, the website attracts over 11 million visits each week, placing it among the top ten social networks. In the past six months, Pinterest has grown by 4000%. This site has become extremely popular with youth and women between the ages of 25 and 54.

The first portion of this book describes how Pinterest works and how to set up an account. It explains how to create different boards for yourself and how to share your own photos or pictures you "pin" on favorite websites or blogs. Ms. Garst tells how to download the "pin" button to your browser so that you can select photos from sites you visit to display on your Pinterest boards. She also explains how to get followers and connect with other Pinterest users.

The second portion of this book shares some tips for using Pinterest to promote your business. The author encourages business owners to be creative and develop interesting pictures on their sites. You can use the images that you pin to your boards to build links to your website and also to other sites. When a person clicks on a picture on your Pinterest board, they are taken to the website or blog where the picture was originally posted.

Ms. Garst states that Pinterest drives more traffic than YouTube, Reddit, Google+ and LinkedIn combined! The strength of this unique platform lies in its simplicity. By connecting items, photos and interests instead of people, Pinterest has revolutionized social media.

My Thoughts
This ebook is an excellent guide for getting started on Pinterest. It also offers many useful ideas on using this platform for building your brand and promoting your business.

Ms. Garst is very persuasive in explaining why a business owner should be using Pinterest. I purchased this ebook because I have opened an account on Pinterest but have not really started using it. This book helped me understand how and why Pinterest could add value to my Internet interests and my life. I highly recommend this ebook to anyone who is interested in using Pinterest to build their personal and business networks.

Rating: 5 Stars out of 5

PS ~ I am just a Pinterest newbie, but I would love for you to push the red "Follow me on Pinterest" button on the side of this blog.

FYI ~ I purchased this ebook with my own funds from Amazon.Com.

Book Review: 33 Million People In The Room

I read the Kindle version of 33 Million People in the Room: How to Create, Influence, and Run a Successful Business with Social Networking by Juliette Powell.  I am an avid Twitter and Facebook user, so I am always looking for books that will increase my skill and knowledge in social media marketing and promotion.
This is a slender book that can be read in a couple of hours, but it is packed full of useful information that will teach you how to use social media to make your business grow and thrive.
Ms. Powell highlights the importance of social networking.  A social network is a Web platform where people can connect with one another.  It is the online counterpart of the rolodex and card catalog wrapped into one, and it's becoming just as widely used.  Social media offers new and exciting ways to communicate.  Social networks aren't just about catching up, they are about staying in touch.
The author uses "Reed's Law" to illustrate the effectiveness of large social networks. Reed's Law suggests that every new person on a network doubles it's value. If you have a network of 25 business contacts, the amount of possible connections and subgroups within your group is an amazing 33 million.
The author provides numourous examples of how entrepreneurs have used social media platforms to build and grow their buisiness empires.  There is plenty of practical information in this book to educate a  newbie and enough details to sharpen the skills of a social media guru.
I really enjoyed the inspiration that this book presents by providing true stories of people who have worked hard and used social media networks to achieve success that truly blows my mind.  I read this book and then I made a list of things that I want to implement to expand my social media networking efforts.
I recommend that you read this book and then use it as a reference tool in the future.

The Power Of Who By Bob Beaudine - A Review

The Power of Who; You Already Know Everyone You Need To Know by Bob Beaudine teaches us a new way to think about business and personal networking.
Mr. Beaudine says, "Networking as we know it is crap. It doesn't work!" He explains that it is a waste of time to depend on acquaintances or strangers to help us achieve our goals or find our dream job. The better strategy is to focus on our inner circle of friends and family members. These are the people that believe in us and want to see us succeed.
The "100/40 Strategy" says the average person could make a list of 100 people they have known during their life. You are then told to make a list of 40 things you want to do and accomplish in life. You can then connect the dots and use the people from the "Who" list to help achieve goals on the "What" list.
Mr. Beaudine is a wonderful storyteller and shares some fascinating personal experiences in this book. One of the most poignant lessons that he shares is "Clue 4 - Rejection" in Chapter 6. He tells of a high school basketball coach that called him off the bench and into a game when the team was 18 points behind and two minutes left before the final buzzer. Bob miraculously scored 10 points in less than one minute. The coach called a time out and yelled, "Beaudine - you hog! Get off the court. First team, you're in!" The team lost, 50 - 42.
Mr. Beaudine acknowledges that there are "hog callers" and "dream killers" everywhere. They have no appreciation for your gifts and talents. "Go where you're celebated, not just tolerated." Your "Who" are your real friends who love you and want to see you succeed.
I have decided to apply the concepts in this book to my own life. I want to re-connect with friends that I have neglected in the past few years. I will nurture and treasure my "Who" in a new way. Thank you, Mr. Beaudine!
