If God Is Love Don't Be A Jerk - Book Review

Title: If God Is Love Don't Be A Jerk; Finding a Faith That Makes Us Better Humans

Author: John Pavlovitz

Publisher: Westminster John Knox Press

Publication Date: September 28, 2021

Length: 238 Pages

About the Author
John Pavlovitz is a blogger, author, and pastor based in North Carolina. His blog, Stuff That Needs to Be Saidrecently surpassed one hundred million views.

We Have One Job; LOVE!
Loving God and neighbor and self is the elemental stuff of Christian prayers, songs, T-shirts, and bumper stickers...and we all know that.

However, there is a difference between knowing the path and walking the path. Love is the path that Jesus laid out for us. This book is about the walking: about imagining what love should or could look like if we take that mandate seriously.

My Thoughts
John Pavlovitz has written a powerful book that challenges the reader to really think about the conclusions we hold about the character of God. Our ability to be loving to ourselves and our neighbors is in many ways a product of these conclusions.

"One set of answers will yield a hopeful, compassionate benevolence that continually moves us to welcome others in and to live with an openhanded generosity...and another is likely to construct a scalding, brimstone-laden judgmentalism that leaves us predisposed to exclude and prone to finger wagging."

The author believes we should be compassionate and empathetic to our fellow human beings. We are all jerks at times...setting out to hurt another person and succeeding. We should ask ourselves, "Am I trying to understand this person, or am I trying to defeat them?" Understanding is a key element in love.

We tend to see the world through the filters of our personal background, culture, and education. It is really difficult to be open-minded and understand the reasons for our preferences and prejudices. We live in our own little world and are mostly ignorant about how the rest of the world is living. This book encourages you to open your mind and your heart. It asks you to really SEE what is going on around you. Your religion is not what you believe, your religion is how you treat people.

Mr. Pavlovitz comes down hard on traditional evangelical churches and challenges them to be "The Church of Not Being Horrible." We have ONE job: LOVE!

Heaven's Dew and Earth's Richness

May God give you heaven's dew and earth's richness. Genesis 27:28.

I will use this card as a birthday card.

The base of the card is a blank Strathmore card that measures 5" by 7".

I chose the digital stamp/sentiment "Bounty" from Mo's Digital Pencil to feature on the front of this card. I used Canva to size and merge the image and sentiment. The hill is an element that Maurie Manning offered her Patreon supporters. I printed the image on white cardstock with my HP Photo Printer and Instant Ink. I hand-colored the image with Copic Sketch markers and Winsor & Newton Promarkers/Brush Markers. I love to mix and match my alcohol markers. I cut/embossed the image with a Spellbinders die in my die cutting machine. I mounted the image on a piece of back cardstock.

The background is a Yellow Dandelion paper. This paper was offered to Maurie Manning's Patreon supporters. I love to print digital papers on my home printer and I never run out of ink.

I embellished the card with some brown ribbon with white stitches (Stampin' Up). I then used the Spellbinder's Floral Corner 2 die to make the yellow embellishments around the corners of the image. I added three bright yellow paper flowers from my stash.

I matted the image on a piece of dark brown cardstock and then attached it to the white Strathmore card.

I will enter this card in the following challenges;
Ellibelle's Corner August Challenge
Moo-Mania Butterflies Challenge #197
Mo's Digital Pencil Challenge #282
Watercolor Wednesday - Karen's Feminine "Anything Goes" WWC233

Finding Happy Starts With a Decision

Finding Happy: 10 Keys to Living an Extraordinary Life

Author: Chad Kneller

Publisher: Clovercroft Publishing

Publication Date: October 1, 2018

Length: 124 pages

About the Author
Chad Kneller is the founder and CEO of Made For More Inc; a company dedicated to bridge the gap between reality and possibilities for aspiring entrepreneurs. Mr. Kneller served as an Army officer after pursuing a music career in the rock and roll industry.

Resilience, Perseverance and Faith
Mr. Kneller has penned a book that is both memoir and motivational. He defines ten keys that will help you find happiness and live a rewarding and fulfilling life.

The author tells how he went from failure in his early years to fortune by becoming a successful husband, father, businessman and leader.

My Thoughts
I want to begin by thanking Mr. Kneller for his service to our country. He served two stints in the U.S. Army and completed the requirements to earn his college degree and become an Army officer. As a military mother, I have a great deal of respect for his hard work and dedication to our country.

The author is very transparent about the mistakes and bad choices he made as a young man. However, he was able to put these things behind him and work hard to achieve a better life for himself and his family.

Mr. Kneller boldly credits his Christian faith for giving him strength and guidance to become the man he is today. He shares passages from the Bible to support his quest for finding happiness and joy.

"Finding happy starts with a decision. It's deciding you are going to be happy and starting off each day with an attitude of gratitude...The key is deciding to be happy."
This book gives you motivation, inspiration, encouragement, and journaling prompts to help you reflect on what you read. "Finding Happy" is an excellent selection to get the new year off to a great start.

A Transplant for the Cure - Finding a Donor

Karen Luehrmen, Janette Luehrman Fuller, Lois Luehrman Crane.
The Cancer Treatment Center of America in Tulsa is in the background.
Many changes were coming in 2014. Karen had been living with CLL/SLL (Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia/Small Lymphocytic Lymphoma)  for six years. She decided it was time to leave her job at Joyce Meyer Ministries and move back to our childhood home in Higginsville, Missouri.

She sold her house in St. Louis and completed the move by mid-July. She was feeling good and enjoyed helping our mother on the farm.

In November, Karen was feeling symptoms of the disease and knew that it was back. She decided to make an appointment with a doctor at the Cancer Treatment Centers of America in Tulsa. Her new doctor strongly encouraged her to consider an allogeneic stem cell transplant.

In March of the next year, Lois and I decided to accompany Karen to her doctor appointment in Tulsa. Even though Karen had not decided to have a transplant, the doctor wanted to have Lois and I tested to see if we were a match. An allogeneic transplant uses cells from a volunteer donor. The chance that any one sibling would be a perfect match (that is, that you both received the same set of HLA antigens from each of your parents) is 1 out of 4.

When the results of the testing came in, Lois was a 50% match and I was a PERFECT MATCH!

I was totally shocked when I heard that I would be a donor for my sister's stem cell transplant. I don't even give blood! At the age of 62, I was unprepared for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to give the gift of life.

However, Karen was still not convinced that a transplant was the right choice for her future treatment. She posted the following message on Facebook the week after we received the results of the donor testing.

Now that you know how my family feels, I would like to speak for myself. I originally received a diagnoses of CLL-SLL in 2008. For the past 7 years, I have had oncologists tell me there is no cure and eventually I will have to die from this. This doctor says a bone morrow transplant will cure the disease but can only offer a 50% chance that it will be successful. The other option is to continue using chemo to attack the disease until it is no longer effective and I die from the disease.
Now, I am not against doctors and medical science but they are NOT God. This is what He (Jesus, my Lord and Savior) has to say about my situation:
Exodus 15:26 "...for I am the Lord that healeth thee".
Ps. 118:8 "It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man."
Ps. 103: 2 - 5 "Bless the Lord O my soul and forget not all His benefits: Who FORGIVES all your iniquities; who HEALS ALL YOUR DISEASES; who REDEEMS your life from destruction; who CROWNS you with loving kindness and tender mercies; who SATISFYS your mouth with good things, so that your youth is renewed like the eagles".
Is 53:4 - 5 "Surely he hath borne our sicknesses and carried our pains; yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But HE WAS WOUNDED for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes WE ARE HEALED".
Matthew 9:35 "And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching...and preaching...and HEALING EVERY sickness and EVERY disease among the people".
I Peter 2:24 "Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by who stripes ye WERE HEALED.
Gal. 2:20 I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by FAITH in the Son of God, who loved me and gave HIMSELF for me.
Col. 1: 13 Jesus HAS delivered me from the power of darkness and translated me into the kingdom of the Son of His love
Romans 8:2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death
Prov. 4:20 - 22 "My son, give attention to my words; incline your ear to my sayings; do not let them depart from your eyes; keep them in the midst of your heart; for THEY ARE MEDICINE to those who find them and HEALTH to ALL their FLESH.
Mark 11:22-23 Have faith in God. For assuredly I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, be removed and be cast into the sea, and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will come to pass, he will have whatever he says.
Mark 9:23 IF you can believe, ALL THINGS are possible to him who believes.
Jesus said the devil comes to steal, kill and destroy. Jesus has already carried my disease in his body and by his stripes, I AM healed. Circumstances come to exalt themselves above the knowledge of God but I will NOT tremble in fear at the lies of the devil. He has already been defeated and I have the victory. Healing is mine and I will NOT allow him to steal it from me.
My request is that you stand on these scriptures with me and pray in agreement with me that the manifestation of my total and complete healing will be verified and documented through medical test by this doctor, that she may come to know the God who brought about this miracle. Gods timing is perfect and He is never late. Praise His holy name! Greater is He who lives in me, than he that is in the world!!

This Facebook message demonstrates the strength of Karen's faith in the healing power of Jesus Christ. The time would soon come when she realized that God uses doctors to assist in His healing work.

Book Review: Get Your Hopes Up! by Joyce Meyer

ONE WORD BOOK REVIEW: HOPE

Get Your Hopes Up!: Expect Something Good to Happen to You Every Day

 Author: Joyce Meyer

 Length: 197 Pages

About The Author
Joyce Meyer is one of the world's leading practical Bible teachers. Her daily broadcast, Enjoying Everyday Life, airs on hundreds of television networks and radio stations worldwide. Joyce has written nearly 100 inspirational books.

Be A Prisoner Of Hope
Hope isn't something we wait to feel, it is something we decide to have. We can choose hope.

This powerful new book by Joyce Meyer is divided into the following sections:

Section 1: Hope To Go Higher
Your life will go only as high as the level of your expectations.

Section 2: Hope When You Are Hurting
Have a happy anticipation that God is going to show up on the scene, that He won't be late, and that He is going to calm the storm.

Section 3: Hope and Happiness
Whatever unexpected challenge or frustration you may face, decide in advance that you're not going to let it steal your joy.

Section 4: Hope is Here
God wants you to live in hope so that even on days when it seems like everything around you is spinning out of control, you can be firm in your belief that something good is going to happen.

My Thoughts
This is a very inspirational book based on the author's experiences, entertaining and meaningful stories and passages from the Bible.

We all need hope. This book explains how we can find it and make it a lasting influence in our lives. The most important thing is to place our hope in God. We must believe it, meditate on it, speak it, and encourage others who are also facing trials.

Joyce Meyer has written dozens of books and I believe this one is right up there with the best of them. This book will be life-changing if you read the words and hold them close to your heart.

Book Review: Power Thoughts Devotional by Joyce Meyer

Power Thoughts Devotional: 365 Daily Inspirations for Winning the Battle of the Mind
By Joyce Meyer
Publisher: Faith Words
Date:  October 22, 2013

About The Author
Joyce Meyer is one of the world's leading practical Bible teachers. A #1 New York Times bestselling author, her books have helped millions of people find hope and restoration.

Happy New Year!
I have taken a little break from blogging over the past two months. I appreciate all my readers and thank you for your encouragement and support. I am looking forward to a wonderful year of blogging in 2014.

An Inspirational Resource For The New Year
"Power Thoughts Devotional" is based on Joyce Meyer's New York Times bestseller, "Power Thoughts". This book provides 365 daily devotions to help eliminate negative thoughts and encourage power thoughts.

The devotions provide a Bible verse, a message and a brief power thought. These devotions are based on Joyce Meyer's teachings and are designed to change your thoughts and your life.

My Thoughts
I am very impressed with this devotional book. The devotions are very brief and can be read in a minute or two. It is amazing how the author presents such powerful content in just a few sentences.  You definitely get quality instead of quantity in this book.

The devotions always give you something to think about and to apply to your life. The "Power Thoughts" are only a few words and can be easily committed to memory. An example of a Power Thought is, "I will not live in fear".

Today is the first day of a new year. This book can make a difference in your life. I plan on starting today and using this book as my devotional book for the entire year of 2014. Take a few moments each day to renew your mind and receive guidance from the Word of God. Highly recommended!

Book Review: Miracles of Archangel Gabriel by Doreen Virtue

Miracles of Archangel Gabriel

Author: Doreen Virtue

Publisher: Hay House

Release Date: July 15, 2013

About The Author
Doreen Virtue holds B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees in counseling psychology and is a lifelong clairvoyant who works with the angelic realm.

Archangel Gabriel
This book explores how God sends angels to those in need. In particular, Archangel Gabriel is assigned to help mothers and messengers. Gabriel is mostly known as the "Messenger Angel".

Ms. Virtue's studies of Archangel Gabriel were based on reading the Bible and other spiritual texts. The author also conducted field studies of people who've had modern miracles that they credit to Archangel Gabriel.

This book is illustrated with beautiful color paintings and prints of Archangel Gabriel.

My Thoughts
The author provides detailed information about the history of Archangel Gabriel. She includes all the passages from the King James Version of the Bible in which Gabriel is specifically named.

The case studies about real people who have received help and guidance from Archangel Gabriel are very inspirational. I chose this book because I believe I had an encounter with Gabriel many years ago.

In 1992, my daughter and I were in a very bad car wreck. I was lying on the ground and in great pain because my leg was broken in 5 places. A strange man walked up to me and took my hand. He said his name was Gabriel. I heard him ask for a blanket and he put it over me. He asked me to count forward and backward, he asked me to name the day of the week and he asked me to name the president of the United States. He stayed with me while the ambulance attendants worked with the other driver. I remember hearing him tell the EMTs that he thought I was going into shock.

I was loaded into the ambulance and didn't see Gabriel again. However, a few days later I got a telephone call in the hospital. The voice sounded distant but he said he was Gabriel and wanted to make sure I was OK. Suddenly, the line went dead and all I heard was static.

If you don't believe in angels, you probably won't like this book very much. I am a believer and I found this book informative and inspirational. The stories in this book will warm your heart and the beautiful illustrations are a feast for the eyes.

Make Hay While The Sun Shines

Make hay while the sun shines - that's smart; go fishing during harvest - that's stupid.  Proverbs 10:5 (From The Message by Eugene Peterson)

He who gathers in summer is a wise son; He who sleeps in harvest is a son who causes shame.   Proverbs 10:5 (From the New Kings James Version of the Bible)

I live in a rural area of southeast Texas. The grass is allowed to grow and our neighbor cuts, rakes and bales the grass into large round bales of hay. He takes the hay to feed to his horses or sells the hay to ranchers for their cattle.

This week was our first harvest of hay in the 2012 season. It is very nice to see our grass green and the freshly baled hay in the field. Texas suffered a historic drought in 2011 and our grass dried up and died. We didn't have a single harvest of hay the entire year.

I started thinking about the saying "make hay while the sun shines." In general, it means to make the most of one's opportunities while you have the chance. It means to complete your work as soon as possible because you don't know what tomorrow will bring. It means to store up for bad times while things are good.

It goes back to the time when hay was cut by hand with a scythe. It had to be cut while the grass or grain was dry, so when the sun shone, it would dry out enough for hay to be cut. If you waited another day, it might rain, and the hay would begin to rot, and you wouldn't have enough to feed your stock in winter, and they, and you, would die. Life was dependent on getting things done at the right time.
So. The proverb means "take advantage of opportunity as soon as it arises. Your life may depend on it."
John S.

One of Aesop's most famous fables was the story of The Grasshopper and the Ant. The ant was very wise and stored up food in the summer when there was plenty. He knew he would need the food to survive the winter. He was thoughtful and serious. The grasshopper was the merriest creature in the word. He sang all summer long, but when the winter came he died of hunger and cold.

Are you taking advantage of the opportunities that are available to you? Are you making hay while the sun shines?

Book Review: What Really Matters; 7 Lessons for Living from the Stories of the Dying

A "perfect storm" is brewing for 79 million members of the baby boom generation, according to Colorado physician Karen Wyatt. With advancing age, these individuals must cope with the passing of their parents while also confronting the inevitability of their own death.
"What Really Matters; 7 Lessons for Living from the Stories of the Dying" by Karen M. Wyatt, M.D., is a collection of stories about dying patients and their insights on living and dying.

About The Author
Karen M. Wyatt is a family physician who has spent her 25 year medical career working with patients in challenging settings, such as hospices, nursing homes and indigent clinics. She has founded a free medical clinic in a homeless shelter, accompanied three medical mission teams to Honduras, and led a non-profit clinic for the uninsured in its growth from a 4-hour per week all-volunteer operation to a full-time, full-service medical center.

7 Lessons For Living
This book was written by a physician who has spent many years caring for hospice patients. She wrote this book to share the life lessons that she learned from her patients. The lessons are based on seven statements that Jesus Christ uttered on the cross;
  • The meaning of Suffering "I thirst."
  • Love and recognizing life's priorities "Woman behold your son; behold your mother."
  • Forgiveness and letting go of limiting beliefs and past traumas "Father forgive them for they know not what they are doing."
  • Paradise "Truly I say to you today, you will be with me in Paradise."
  • The true Purpose of existence "My God, my God for this I was kept (this was the destiny for which I was born.)"
  • Surrender and the key to unlocking the flow of grace "O my Father, into thy hands I commit my Spirit."
  • Impermanence and transcending fear "It is fulfilled."
This book uses verses from the Bible but it's spiritual focus is not limited to any particular religious belief. The book has a strong message for readers of any faith or philosophy.

The chapters in this book include case studies of specific patients that Dr. Wyatt has worked with in the past. These stories illustrate how patients and their family members can experience profound spiritual growth during the final days of life.

My Thoughts
I read this book because of the experiences that my family had with hospice care when my father suffered from congestive heart failure and passed away in October, 2010.

I found the case studies and the teachings in this book to be very poignant and touching. I found myself in tears many times as I read this book.

I think one of the hardest lessons to learn is that we will all die and that death is not to be feared. We must stop denying death and focus on living lives that really matter. The final chapter in this book provides ideas for implementing the "7 Lessons" in daily life. I think you will find much food for thought in this book. This book will inspire and motivate you to make some changes in your life.
Highly Recommended!

My Rating: 5 Stars Out Of 5

FYI ~ I received a paperback copy of this book to read and review from the author's publicist. Thank you!

Book Review: Total Abandon; The Powerful True Story of Life Lived in Radical Devotion to God

The Webster's Dictionary defines a martyr as "one who voluntarily suffers death as the penalty of witnessing to and refusing to renounce his religion." "Total Abandon; The Powerful True Story of Life Lived in Radical Devotion to God", by Gary Witherall, is the story of the life and death of Bonnie Witherall.
In surrender to God's calling, Bonnie and Gary Witherall traded the security of life in the U.S. for danger and uncertainty in the war-torn city of Sidon, Lebanon. This is the story of the Witherall's journey to Lebanon and the death of Bonnie at the hands of a terrorist gunman.

About the Author
Gary Witherall is an evangelist and speaker, continuing to travel overseas sharing Christ and challenging God's people to live totally surrendered to Him.

The Story of a Young Martyr
Gary Witherall understands what "total abandon" really means. He tells how he met his future wife, Bonnie Penner, while attending classes at the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago. They both felt the call of God on their lives to serve in the mission field.

Gary and Bonnie were married in April of 1997. After their marriage, they moved into a comfortable home in Portland, Oregon, and went to work in the debt collection department of a bank. Three years passed and they became supervisors at the bank but they were not fulfilled.

They both felt a burning desire to follow God's call to the Middle East to minister to Muslims in Lebanon. They realized what every missionary must realize: You have to die to yourself.

You have to be willing to say over and over, "Yes, Lord. Any time, any place, whatever you want, including dying." He says, Go. And we go.
Bonnie Witherall was working at a clinic for Palestinian women on the morning of November 21, 2002. She opened the door and a gunman shot her three times in the face. She died at the scene.

My Thoughts
This book is heart-wrenching and poignant but also inspiring and challenging. The Witheralls were passionately on fire for the Lord and followed His leading to the Middle East.

I think the author did an excellent job describing what it is like to be a missionary in a place where you don't know the language, you have no friends and you have to build a life from scratch. Well, they actually did have a friend and that ONE friend made all the difference in the world. The Witheralls were never alone because Jesus Christ was with them.

Mr. Witherall shared the grief that he felt in the days, weeks and months that followed his wife's murder. He has survived the pain and heartache of this tragic event and continues to surrender his life to God's service.

My Rating: 5 Stars Out Of 5

FYI ~ The minister of my home church, Pastor Dale Inman, highly recommended this book and let me borrow his personal copy. Pastor Inman has gone on numerous mission trips to the Mideast and continues to be active in this ministry.

Book Review: Ten - How Would You Rate Your Life?

How would you rate your life on a fulfillment scale of one to ten?  "Ten; How Would You Rate Your Life"?, by Terry Smith, offers you a pathway to level-TEN living.

This book reminds us that God has a special future for each of us. Are you ready for your life to be a TEN?

About the Author
Terry A. Smith has served as a lead pastor of the Life Christian Church for twenty years. TLCC is a nondenominational faith community in West Orange, NJ, serving the New York City metro area. Terry is a co-founder of the New York City Leadership Center and an instructor in its Leadership Fellows program. A gifted communicator, Terry speaks in a variety of venues nationally and internationally. He is passionate about challenging, developing, and encouraging leaders.-

A Guidebook for the Journey
Pastor Smith has written a vibrant, inspiring book about how to find and live God's will for our lives. He believes that God has more in store for us than we realize and we must strive to create the best possible future for ourselves and others.

The book is divided into the following seven sections that instruct and guide the reader in living a TEN life;
  • Awaken
  • Discover
  • Imagine
  • Grow
  • Act
  • Lead
  • Go
The author believes that people do not want enough. Not more stuff. More life. And not just for ourselves but also for others. Jesus Christ said that His purpose is to give us more "life - life in all its fullness" or "more and better life than [you] ever dreamed of" (John 10:10, NCV, MSG).

The author challenges and provokes the reader to go after the more and better life that God wants for you. The world needs people who would never be satisfied with anything less than a TEN.

My Thoughts
This book is written and organized in a very professional manner. The author makes a strong case for living your best life and he uses Scripture from the Bible as a foundation for his message.

There are "Reflection Questions" at the end of each of the seven sections. These questions are great for individual or group reflection and meditation. This book would be a very helpful resource for a Bible study group.

I love the enthusiasm and passion that the author communicates in this book. I can tell that this is a man who really "walks the talk" and "practices what he preaches".

Pastor Smith believes we must have more than a dream. Our grand vision needs to be turned into an actionable plan. I recommend this book to anyone who is ready to start living a TEN life.

My Rating: 5 Stars Out Of 5

FYI ~ I received a complimentary hardback copy of this  book to read and review from Audra Jennings of The B & B Media Group.

Kindle Books For Kids: Heaven Is For Real For Kids

Colton Burpo tells the story about how he got sick and went to Heaven when he was almost four-years-old. "Heaven is for Real for Kids; A Little Boy's Astounding Story of His Trip to Heaven and Back", by Todd Burpo, is written in a child's words and is meant to be shared with other children. The color illustrations reflect the experience Colton had during his amazing trip to Heaven.

About The Author
Todd Burpo is the pastor of Crossroads Wesleyan Church in Imperial, Nebraska where his sermons are broadcast locally every Sunday via the local radio station. He volunteers at Chase County Public Schools as wrestling coach for Junior High school students, as well as serving as a member of the school board. Todd graduated from Oklahoma Wesleyan University in 1991 with a BA in Theology. He was ordained in 1994.

A Little Boy's Journey to Heaven
Colton Burpo was almost four-years-old when he became ill and was taken to the hospital. During his stay in the hospital, he closed his eyes and found himself being carried to Heaven by an angel.

Colton describes all the things he saw and all the things he experienced while in Heaven. The text is very simple and is written in a way that children can understand. Each page is illustrated with a beautiful color illustration that complements the text. There is also a Bible verse on each page that supports the experiences that Colton described while he was in Heaven.

My Thoughts
This book is a child's version of the best-selling adult book "Heaven is for Real; A Little Boy's Astounding Story of His Trip to Heaven and Back." I have not read this original version of the book but plan to read it in the future.

I read this book on my Kindle 3 (black and white illustrations) and on the Kindle for PC Application (color illustrations). The illustrations and text are a good fit for the Kindle. Children will find this book easy and enjoyable to read on the small screen of the Kindle.

I think the child's version of "Heaven is for Real" is a book that is well-suited to share with children of all ages. This book will help parents explain what happens after a person dies. Colton remembers seeing all kinds of animals in heaven so this book would also be appropriate to answer questions about what happens to pets when they die.

Christian parents will find this book poignant and astounding. It is truly amazing that this young child could have an experience like this and be able to describe it in such vivid detail. There will always be skeptics, but I found Colton's story very believable and inspiring.

The theme of this book is "Jesus really, really loves children and Jesus really, really loves you." There is a FAQ section at the end of the book that provides more information about the Burpo family and Colton's experience. Highly recommended.

FYI ~ I checked-out this ebook from my public library.

Book Review: He Restores My Soul

Do you feel like the mistakes you have made in the past are keeping you from having a close relationship with God?
"He Restores My Soul; The Journey Of A Servant", by Randy S. Dean, Sr., is the story of how the author fell to the temptations of sexual addiction while serving as a Christian pastor.

About The Author
Randy S. Dean was born and raised in Los Angeles. At the age of 19, he received his calling to serve God as a minister of the gospel. In 1984, he served his country in the United States Air Force and was honorably discharged after six years receiving various awards for his service including the Air Force Commendation medal.
Pastor Dean currently serves as the Executive Assistant to Bishop Milton Herring with Advancing the Kingdom of God Ministries (ATKOG) based in Torrance, California.

The Lord Is My Shepherd
The title of this book is taken from the 23rd Psalm. The term "restores" suggests not the ending of a restoration process, but rather the continuation of it. To restore something suggests a previous state of unacceptable existence is changed back to it's original beauty. The author hopes this book will help restore and heal those who have experienced emotional and spiritual damage.

Randy Dean shares his personal story about how he fell to the temptation of sexual addiction and pornography while employed as a pastor at a Christian church. The author did not go into the graphic details of his addictions but he made it very clear that his bad behavior resulted in his divorce and the estrangement of his family.

The author uses passages from the Bible to explain the restoration and recovery process. This is a gradual journey that must be done with patience and faith. This book is for everyone who wants a closer relationship with God, but it is especially aimed at pastors and leaders in the church. This book offers help and hope to God's servants who feel isolated and alone with their shame.

My Thoughts
I want to thank Pastor Dean for having the courage to share his story and address this sensitive subject. People tend to have very high expectations of their church leaders and are shocked to find out that they have the same temptations and faults as everyone else. The good news is that God forgives sinners and we can also forgive ourselves.
This is a self-published book that is available in paperback and for the Kindle. Pastor Dean is not a professional writer but is very good at expressing thoughts and feelings from his heart. As I read this book, I felt like I was having a conversation with the author and he was talking directly to me. I could tell that the author has truly "walked the walk" and is now reaching out to help others.
I would like to share a quote from Bishop Milton S. Herring (printed on the back cover of the book) ~ "This book may be an answered prayer for you or someone you know." I agree.

My Rating: 5 Starts Out Of 5

FYI ~ Thank you to Randy Dean for sending me a complimentary paperback copy of this book to read and review.

Showing Love and Hospitality To Others

I would like to share this guest post by Roxanne Packham, author of "Inspired Design".  This article will inspire you to reach out to others in a spirit of caring, sharing and love.

Before we are inspired about how to show love to others, we must first ask why?

Quite simply it is because in Romans 12:10 & 13 we are told to be devoted to one another in brotherly love, to honor one another above ourselves. We are also told to share with God’s people who are in need and to practice hospitality. Notice the vocabulary: practice, not perfect.

In America, as a culture and as individuals, we are suffering in part because popular media gears everything to perfection. We are bombarded with messages that if we aren’t the very best at something, we just shouldn’t bother. We compare ourselves to others, rather than knowing our worth in God’s eyes.

I suffer from insecurity and wonder if I can be creative enough to inspire. Are my tips original? Are the photographs beautiful enough? Are my suggestions too simple for some, but too fancy for another? The problem: my thoughts revolve completely around me. My creativity, my skills, my ability. This is not about me but about God’s purpose for me. I suddenly realize the bigger picture; I can’t do it, but I can through Christ who strengthens me.

This dance in my mind between my preciousness in His sight and the enemy’s interjections has slowed me down at times, but God showed me this dance is the very reason for us to love others; to encourage each other. Because we are human we suffer from doubt, insecurity, and rejection of one sort or another. We are God’s tool to encourage others. God uses us as His hands to love others, but make no mistake it is His power, His grace and the Holy Spirit that do the real work, not ours.

God’s path of creativity in me began with a family history of silversmithing eight generations back, a degree from USC, design school in Paris, then design school in Los Angeles. Call them spiritual or otherwise, but they were the gifts God saw fit to give to me. Who am I to argue with my Creator? They are unique and I celebrate them. What are your magnificent and unique gifts that you can use to inspire others?

I do not want the gifts received as a blessing from God to “turn into spiritual dry rot,” as Ann Voscamp suggests in her book One Thousand Gifts, as the manna did when it was hoarded in Exodus 16:20. I want to use my blessings.

Inadequacies and all, imperfections and all: I want to inspire others to practice Hospitality and to LOVE others.

Creative Ways to Encourage Others on Valentine’s Day

KIND WORDS
A handwritten note with quotes, scriptures and words of encouragement is a wonderful thing to find in the mailbox.
Leave a sticky note on your child/husband’s pillow or be bold and write your note on the bathroom mirror or car window in red lipstick saying “I love you”.
Even an email just to say “thank you for your hard work, you bless me” can make a person’s day. A cute poem, scripture or old photograph will remind them they are remembered.
If someone has lost a loved one, kind words of some way that loved one inspired you to do something better will let them know that their loved one’s legacy is living on.

AN INVITATION, TIME
Take some time out of your days to meet someone for coffee, lunch, a long walk, or even just leave a phone message with a sweet sentiment. If you have more time, take a picnic basket to their home. Set up a lunch, tea or coffee, with all your tea cups and a candle. It is a lovely surprise! Just rinse when you finish and pack back up so they don’t even have to do dishes. They will have a lovely memory of a special time.

THOUGHTFUL GESTURE
Hang flowers on the front door handle, leave a pretty tiny package in the mailbox with a beautiful red bow, or cookies delivered to the front door. Create a breakfast plate for your child that says you are special . This is especially significant if your child has struggled with something recently.

A BEAUTIFUL DINNER
Of course this takes more time, but try for a beautiful table setting complete with candles, fresh greens or flowers and a lovely menu either handwritten or printed out on your computer. Don’t concentrate on the gourmet or complicated quality of the meal: remember it is about relationship and encouragement!

VALENTINE’S DINNER
A beautiful table for Valentine’s simply consists of reds, pinks and perhaps some purple. (Although it could be beautiful in all white too.) Of course, it has to have some hearts and some colorful candles. Leave kind words of some sort on each place setting. Every Valentine’s table should have its share of sparkle, of course!

The Hidden Gifts of Helping: Do Good Things For Others This Holiday Season

I have the privilege of publishing a guest article by Stephen G. Post, author of "The Hidden Gifts of Helping; How the Power of Giving, Compassion and Hope Can Get Us Through Hard Times."  I will be posting a book review/giveaway on Friday, December 9 ~ Don't miss your opportunity to win a copy of this inspiring book!

Ebenezer Scrooge begins in The Christmas Carol with a “Bah humbug!” He is both miserly and miserable. As the story unfolds, he eventually discovers the “giver’s glow,” as I like to term it. He is dancing on the streets in the enduring joy of his newfound generosity of heart. I compare the giver’s glow to a glow stick that children get at parades and fairs. These are the translucent plastic tubes containing substances that when combined make light through a chemical reaction. After the glass capsule in the plastic casing is broken, it glows. The brokenness is part of the process. Give and grow, give and glow. Scrooge discovered this before it was too late.

Human beings are wired to give of themselves for noble purposes, regardless of circumstances. Recently, I delivered a sermon in an African-American Baptist church in Coram, New York. The subject was how we benefit when we love our neighbor. Afterwards, a wonderful elderly woman, who was full of vitality, said to me, “You know, that giver’s glow is how we African Americans have been getting through hard times for two centuries!”

On the inside cover of a copy of The Book of Common Prayer, given to me in 1986 by the Rev. William B. Eddy of Tarrytown, New York, is an accumulating memorial list of twenty people I have known closely as models of kindness and generosity over the years. To get on the list a person must have passed on and, by all accounts, remained generous even in their final days. These are people who understood that happiness is not to be found just in the getting, but in the giving, and they taught by example. Have you noticed the warm glow in your heart that comes when you act kindly? They had a deep sense of common humanity, and they all had a certain happiness about them—a sort of gaiety that comes with a life well-lived and rightly inspired.

In my most recent book, The Hidden Gifts of Helping: How the Power of Giving, Compassion, and Hope Can Get Us Through Hard Times (Jossey-Bass, A Wiley Imprint), I describe a bit of an upheaval in my own life, and how helping others got me and my family through the inevitable tough times that come everyone’s way.

“After twenty years of being ‘at home’ in the Cleveland suburb of Shaker Heights, my job disappeared. Maybe we were too attached to Cleveland, and maybe God wanted us to move on. But as a family we never anticipated just how challenging up-rootedness is, especially when it is not something that you would have opted for in better times. So in June of 2008, we sold the house and moved east on Route 80 from Ohio to the George Washington Bridge, landing in Stony Brook. What a great place! But still, we just had not quite imagined how stressful such a move would be and how hard we would have to work to find renewed peace of mind and heart.

“Suddenly cut adrift from friends and community, we felt painfully uprooted—out of place, stressed out, disoriented and at odds with each other. Most movers suffer from a lack of companionship and intimate friends, at least temporarily, and doing this repeatedly is really tough. Fortunately, we had those twenty good years in Ohio. We struggled to find our footing with the move, determined to recreate the good life of community and friendships we all so keenly missed. The key turned out to be something we knew quite well, but learned to remember daily in our upheaval: the healing power of helping others. The medical prescription is this—Rx: Helper Therapy.

“Simply put, helping others helps the helper. Research in the field of health psychology, as well as all the great spiritual traditions, tells us that one of the best ways to get rid of anger and grief is to actively help others. Science supports this assertion: Giving help to others measurably reduces the giver’s stress; improves health and well-being in surprising and powerful ways; renews our optimism about what is possible; helps us connect to family, friends and lots of amazing people; allows the deep, profound joy of our humanity to flow through us and out into the world; and improves our sense of self-worth. These are valuable gifts anytime and particularly in hard times. If there is one great secret to life, this is it.”

After all was said and done, this move worked out. My wife found a grade school where she could continue her work as a teaching assistant for especially needy children, my son Drew volunteered at the hospital and I started working with families of individuals with autism. We eventually realized that wherever we are, we are at home when we can contribute to the lives of others. We got back in touch with the things that matter most, and maybe that is what hard times are for. We helped others in ways that we felt called to, we used our strengths so as to feel effective and we shared our experiences with family, faith community and like-minded others.

Eventually, of course, everyone stumbles on hard times, and no one gets out of life alive. Today, even those who had considered themselves protected from hardship are being touched and their lives changed by volatile economic markets, job uncertainty and the increasing isolation and loneliness of modern life.

Here are four things to keep in mind. First, as Washington Irving put it so well: “Love is never lost. If not reciprocated, it will flow back and soften and purify the heart.” Second, love often does beget love, just as hate usually begets hate, and so good givers need to be good receivers. Third, we should never count on reciprocity because this is sure to be frustrating and ultimately small-minded. Better to take joy when those upon whom our love is bestowed do not “pay it back” to us, but rather “pay it forward” to others as they move through life remembering our good example. Or to bring this to the kitchen table, as I heard one Italian mother in Cleveland tell her son, “Love and forget about it!” And fourth, in I Corinthians Paul linked “faith, hope and love,” and he proclaimed that “love never fails.” What is faith but having confidence that no matter how harsh a particular scene in the drama of our lives or of history might be, it is love that wrote the play and love that will be revealed in the final act.

Do a little good this holiday season. The 2010 Do Good Live Well Survey, released by United Healthcare and VolunteerMatch (www.VolunteerMatch.org), surveyed 4,500 American adults. 41 percent of Americans volunteered an average of 100 hours a year. 68 percent of those who volunteered in the last year reported that volunteering made them feel physically healthier. In addition:
  • 89% reported that “volunteering has improved my sense of well-bring”
  • 73% agreed that “volunteering lowered my stress levels”
  • 92% agreed that “volunteering enriched my sense of purpose in life”
  • 72% characterized themselves as “optimistic” compared to 60% of non-volunteers
  • 42% of volunteers reported a “very good” sense of meaning in their lives, compared with 28% of non-volunteers
How wise it is to do what one can to contribute benevolently to others!

Some individuals on my The Book of Common Prayer list were well known and others lived quiet lives out of the limelight. Some were appreciated and some not. We might prefer to think that loving servants of goodness would, after a long and successful life, die peacefully in their beds and all people would speak well of them at their funerals. But this is too simplistic. Everyone on my list experienced an enduring joy as a by-product of their generosity. Thus, the motto of my independent Institute for Research on Unlimited Love (www.unlimitedloveinstitute.com), founded with the help of Sir John Templeton (who happens to be on my list!), is “In the giving of self lies the discovery of a deeper self.”

I want to thank Audra Jennings of The B & B Media Group for giving me the opportunity to publish this article.
