Book Review: Crowdfunding - Put the Fun Into Funding and Get the Money You Need by Zynnia Jezek

One Word Book Review: ENTHUSIASM

Crowdfunding: Put the Fun Into Funding And Get The Money You Need: How A Little Girl Raised Over $7k In Four Days On IndieGoGo (Distinct Press Young Entrepreneurs Series)

Author: Zynnia Jezek

Publisher: Distinct Press

Publication Date: December 27, 2014

Print Length: 130 Pages

An 11-Year-Old Girl With A Big Dream
Zynnia Jezek, at the age of 11-years-old, designed a successful crowd funding campaign on IndieGoGo to provide funds for a trip from Florida to the Awesomeness Fest in Hawaii. This event is billed as the ultimate transformational experience for entrepreneurs. Zynnia believed this could be a life-changing event for she and her familly.

The problem was, they did not have the money needed to make the trip.

Zynnia and her sister created an IndieGoGo campaingn called "4 Day Awesomeness Fest Test" and made $6, 475.

This book tells exactly what Zynnia did to make her dream come true.

My Thoughts
I really enjoyed the enthusiasm and excitement depicted in this ebook. The young author/entrepreneur describes a real-life behind the scenes look at a successful  IndieGoGo campaign.

This is not a primer or resource guide for designing a crowd funding campaign. It is a memoir of one girl's experience and how it changed her life.

The author provides screen shots of a series of PowerPoint slides that were used to promote and publicize this campaign. These slides were designed by Zynnia's sister and are quite creative. I think viewing these promotional slides make this book a relevant selection for anyone thinking about running a crowd funding campaign.

The editing and formatting are rough in places, but the content is informative and impressive. Kudos to Zynnia for a great effort. She proves that most anything is possible with determination and a little help from family and friends.

I predict this young lady has a very bright future!

My Rating: 4 Stars Out Of 5

Book Review: Attract And Feed A Hungry Crowd

Attract and Feed a Hungry Crowd: How Thinking Like a Chef Can Help You Build a Solid Business

Written by Tea Del Alma Silvestre

Published by HungryCrowdPress

March 26, 2012

About The Author
Tea Silvestre, aka The Word Chef,  is a recovering English major and coaches solopreneurs on how to find and share their Secret Sauce with the world.

A Feast Of Information
The author begins this book with the following quotation from Linchpin by Seth Godin;
"The future belongs to chefs, not to cooks or bottle washers".
The chef represents people who create the recipes, rather than those who follow them. Ms. Silvestre believes an entrepreneur should think like a chef in order to ensure success. The chef entrepreneur will create their on unique recipes.

Each person has their blend of talents, passions, gifts and resources that make up their "secret sauce". It is a dynamic interaction of your experiences, history and natural abilities. Your secret sauce has to be totally unlike anyone else's.

The author shares nine steps to help you find your secret sauce. The goal of your secret sauce is to figure out exactly what you bring to the table and how to communicate that in a remarkable way.

The author emphasizes the importance of finding clarity, creating a signature dish, setting "big hairy audacious goals" and developing relationships with words and actions.

There is a chapter in the book about the value of storytelling. People will remember your stories much longer than your statistics and lectures. Ms. Silvestre believes your business stories must focus on emotion. The stories we tell literally create our businesses. These stories should describe how your product or service is different. They should teach your readers something new. They should inspire change.

My Thoughts
When I read a book, I can always detect the author who is truly a "word chef". These authors know how to use the English language in a way that educates, persuades and inspires. They know how to inspire change. This book is a real feast of good things that every entrepreneur should be hungry for.

Ms. Silvestre did an outstanding job of stating her case for originality and creativity. She emphasized that we can use the recipes of other chefs when we are learning, but we must create our own original "signature dishes" if we are going to be competitive and successful in the business world.

The author includes a very good Reading List of marketing books at the end of this book. These books should be on the "Must Read" list of all entrepreneurs.

"Attract and Feed a Hungry Crowd" is only 60 pages long but it packs the punch of a much longer book. I emphatically recommend this book to all entrepreneurs and anyone interested in marketing their product or cause. This book will fill you with a delicious feast of knowledge and inspiration.

My Rating:  5 Stars Out Of 5

Book Review: Eat the Rhino; Business Idea to Business Plan in 30 Bites

By Peter and Roberta Budvietas

Smashwords, 2012

ISBN: 978-0-9864587-8-1

About the Authors
Peter and Roberta Budvietas have studied, taught and written about business for over 30 years. They currently manage Budvietas.com Ltd where they offer mentoring and support for business start up and who need focus to grow.

So You Want To Set Up A Business
This book contains the information you need to go from idea for a business to being ready to start doing business. The goal of this book is to bring you to the point where you make the final decision to commit to opening your own business.

Eat The Rhino?
There is an old saying that goes, "How do you eat an elephant?"
The Answer: "One bite at a time."

The authors believe that many people charge in like a rhino when they open a business. The business owners do not have the information or resources they need to operate a successful business.

This book is organized into "30 bites" of useful information for starting a business. Each "bite" is divided into the following parts;
  • Take a bite - a brief introduction of this section.
  • Chew the bite - exercises and detailed information to think about.
  • Savor the bite - implementing the information you discovered in the exercises.
  • Digest the bite - a summary of the bite.
Each bite starts with something general, moves to a specific application of the concept and finishes with a summary.

My Thoughts
This ebook is an excellent choice for entrepreneurs who want to get their business started on the right foot. Preparation is the key to success and this book provides a wealth of information and resources.

I do not have a business background or education, so I can't evaluate the information in this book in a professional manner. I was very impressed with the amount of detail that the authors spent on the financial aspects of setting up and running a business. Many business books that I have read only touch on these subjects and refer you to an accountant or financial professional.

If you read this book and complete all the exercises that are detailed in the text, I think you will be well on the road to business success. After reading this ebook, I feel like I have completed a college course on entrepreneurship. The authors have many years of business experience and are very generous in the amount of instruction that they provide in this book.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is thinking about starting or buying a business.  The exercises in this book will help you determine if entrepreneurship is right for you. If you decide to move forward with your business endeavor, this book offers excellent instruction for doing it right.

My Rating:  5 Stars Out Of 5

FYI ~ Roberta Budvietas sent me a complimentary digital copy of this book to read and review. Thank you!

Book Review: The Ultimate Guide To Marketing Your Business With Pinterest

Pinterest has been called a photo sharing site, a shared pinboard, a bookmarking site, a creative outlet and many other things. How can Pinterest help you market your product or service?

The Ultimate Guide To Marketing Your Business With Pinterest; A Practical Toolkit To Unlock The Web's Latest Social Networking Phenomenon, by Gabriela Taylor, explains how Pinterest is set to become a vital marketing platform for a wide range of businesses.

About The Author
Gabriela Taylor is an internationally educated Global Online Marketing Strategist and Consultant who's worked with some of the world's biggest brands in telecommunications, retail, lifestyle and advertising.

Pinterest For Business
Ms. Taylor is an online marketing professional and is very enthusiastic about the marketing opportunities that Pinterest offers. This book has 140 pages and teaches the reader how to optimize their Pinterest boards to share and promote their business products and services.

This book explains how to get started on Pinterest. There are some impressive graphs that illustrate the remarkable and rapid growth of Pinterest.

Chapter 7, "How To Cash In With Pinterest?", features different kinds of businesses that are using Pinterest to market their products and services.  The author advises entrepreneurs to "pin" their products and services in a catchy way, add a description and link back to your site.

The author also lists the top 10 "most Pinteratctive and engaging brands" and the top "Power Pinners" who have made the most of Pinterest.

Chapter 9, "Advanced Pinterest Strategies", really gets into the meat of how to use Pinterest to market your business. The author instructs readers on Pinterest SEO, how to optimize your profile, how to optimize your web site to encourage "pinning", and how to optimize your pins and boards with hashtags, mentions and likes.

The author provides  a step-by-step plan for using Pinterest to market your business at the end of this book.

My Thoughts
This is the second book that I have read on Pinterest and I am slowly getting into the habit of visiting the site and "pinning" each day. The site is definitely addictive and very pleasing to the eye.

The first half of this book covers the basics of getting started on Pinterest and how to use it. This is very useful information for beginners on Pinterest.

I found the sections that listed the different kinds of businesses that are using Pinterest, the most "Pinteractive brands" and the "power pinners" to be very interesting. I now have a list of people and companies that I want to follow and learn from.

I thought the step-by-step plan for using Pinterest to market your business was very, very helpful. As a matter of fact, I think this list was the highlight of the book.  It is a very good summary of the book and will be a significant help as you get your feet wet on Pinterest.

I have one complaint about this book. I read the book on my Kindle and found the digital formatting to be lacking in quite a few places. One page had two words on it. Many pages just had two or three sentences. I think this problem could be corrected and the book would be much more pleasant to read.

My Rating:  4 Stars Out Of 5

Book Review: Transform Your Ideas Into Income

Do you have a burning desire to start your own business? "Trust Your Heart; Transform Your Ideas Into Income", by Marnie Pehrson, is filled with valuable success tips from nineteen online entrepreneurs.

Read about the life lessons that these entrepreneurs learned while following their heart and building the businesses of their dreams.

About The Author
Marnie L. Pehrson is a best-selling author, speaker and online publicist who helps spiritually-minded entrepreneurs find their place in the world and deliver their messages online. She is the creator of the longest running content directory, www.IdeaMarketers.com, where you can promote your articles, press releases, information products, videos, audios and expertise.

Stories That Will Inspire
This book begins with Marnie Pehrson's story.  Marnie had two young children in 1989 and needed to find a way to earn income from her home. She had taken computer classes in college and thought she might be able to teach others some basic progams that were used in business offices. She placed an ad in the newspaper offering to teach WordPerfect, Pagemaker and Lotus 1-2-3 from her home. Within a few months, she was teaching 50 hours a week in a spare bedroom. She wrote a book on how to run a successful computer training buisiness from your home.  She went on to develop the first online shopping mall and IdeaMarketers.com.

The author shares many lessons that she learned while building her businesses. She highlights the following concepts;
  • Trust the jouney and adapt.
  • Create as you go.
  • Keep your risks low.
  • Remember you are not alone.
Ms. Pehrson interviews eighteen other entrepreneurs in this book. They all tell how they got started, the difficult circumstances they overcame and how they went on to build a successful business. Each story is very special in its own way. All the entrepreneurs have one thing in common...they followed their hearts and transformed ideas into income.

My Thoughts
This book has been on my "wish list" for serveral months. I was very happy yesterday when I noticed that the book was available as a Kindle download for $0.99. I started reading yesterday afternoon and did not put it down until I completed it...yes, I read well past my usual bedtime.
I learned something from each one of the interviews in this book. I realized that these were just normal people that started from scratch and persevered until they achieved success. Here are some things that seemed to be repeated in many of the interviews;
  • Believe in yourself. You must believe that you have the ability to build a business.
  • Marketing is everthingMany of the interviews stressed how important marketing is to building a business. Having a great product is not enough, you have to get the word out to your potential customers.
  • It will not always be a bed of roses. All of the people interviewed have had to deal with serious financial, family and relationship problems. Many lost/quit their jobs and were desparate for an income to survive. Some had to cope with illness and death in their families.
  • Connect with a mentor. Don't be afraid to seek help. Many of these entrepreneurs enrolled in coaching programs that provided guidance and direction for them as they grew their businesses.
  • Never give up. This is the univeral theme of this book. You have to be determined to make it work.
If you are interested in building an online business, you will find real value in this book.  It will provide the boost that you need to transform your ideas into income!

Be Social Be Rich

I recently received a digital review copy of "Be Social Be Rich: Social Networking Your Way to Endless Profits!", by Martha Giffen, to read and review on this blog. I am always looking for new books on the subject of social media marketing so I was thrilled to have this opportunity.
Martha Giffen is CEO of Best Kind Marketing, LLC. She has built a successful business using social networking to connect with people "one person at a time." She has co-authored a best-selling book, produced a popular Twitter training program, created motivational audios, and been featured on numerous talk radio shows. I met Martha during one of the Ultimate Blog Challenges and I have been a fan ever since. She blogs about methods and techniques to help entrepreneurs build thier own online businesses.

Martha Giffen loves people and she understands the power of building relationships. In Be Social Be Rich: Social Networking Your Way to Endless Profits!, she shares the experiences that have helped her build a successful business. Martha is a Twitter Guru and she explains many methods that have helped her meet people, build relationships and get clients. She has used a personal page and fan page to network with hundreds of people on Facebook
Mrs. Giffen explains how to use LinkedIn as a business networking tool. She explains that the profile is very important and is the basis for connecting with other people in your niche. Martha reveals some of her blogging secrets in the chapter on blogging. She explains that blogging is social because sucessful bloggers connect and interact with their readers.
I really enjoyed the chapter entitled, "Secrets of Seminar Networking". I have never attended an internet marketing seminar so I was very interested in this topic. Martha tells how she has met some very influential internet marketers by attending seminars. She explains how she has met many seminar speakers and presenters during after-hours meals and gatherings.
Mrs. Giffen included informative articles by Warren Whitlock, Dabney Porte, and Christina Hills to add more value to this virtual gold mine of social media information.

I REALLY like this book because....
it provides the "total picture" of what is needed to thrive and succeed in the world of social media marketing. Mrs. Giffen makes it very clear that building relationships must always come before the sales pitch. This means getting out of your comfort zone and reaching out to people.
This book will inspire and motivate you. I have a feeling that Martha will touch your heart just like she did mine. I learned that "being social" can lead to financial riches but more importantly, it will provide opportunities to develop relationships and friendships that will last a lifetime.

Be Social Be Rich: Social Networking Your Way to Endless Profits! is now available in paperback version at Amazon.com. The Kindle version will be available soon.

Will You Poke The Box?

Seth Godin has written a book that will challenge you to start...initiate...begin...GO!
This is a manifesto about starting. Starting a project, making a ruckus, taking what feels like a risk.
This is not a book about thinking about it or making a plan.
It is about going beyond the point of no return...leaping...committing...making something happen.
This book is about having the guts and the heart and the passion to ship. The challenge is getting into the habit of starting. The desire to move forward.

Mr. Godin puts it this way in his new book, Poke the Box;

Imagine that the world had no middlemen, no publishers, no bosses, no HR folks, no one telling you what you couldn't do.
If you lived in that world, what would you do?
Go. Do that.
Mr. Godin believes the fear of failure is the reason many people hold back and hesitate to start a new endeavor. It might be only a temporary failure, but that doesn't matter so much if the very thought of it shuts you down. Risk is avoided becuase we have been trained to avoid failure. Many people are stuck with the status quo because they are afraid to make any kind of change.

The author believes that avoiding failure is counterproductive. We will learn from our failures. All great people in history have learned from their failures and moved forward. The more you do, the more you fail.

It is time to take the initiative to do work you decide is worth doing. What is your calling? There are no instructions or lists. Mr. Godin is very passionate when he says,
Please stop waiting for a map.
We reward those who draw maps, not those who follow them.
This book is a call to action. It should be a kick in the pants to all who are waiting, planning, hesitating and evaluating. The time to get started is now. Poking doesn't mean right. It means ACTION. And remember, starting means you're going to finish. If it doesn't ship, you've failed. You haven't poked the box if the box doesn't realize it's been poked.

Will you poke the box? Will you change your way of thinking to allow yourself to take a risk? Will you focus on the work, not on the fear that comes from doing the work?

Mr. Godin is daring you to do the work you're capable of, the work that matters. You can't lose. GO!

Will you poke the box? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below.

I Am Enchanted

I am enchanted. "Enchantment: The Art of Changing Hearts, Minds, and Actions", by Guy Kawasaki, is about influence and persuasion. The author defines "enchantment" as the process of delighting people with a product, service, organization, or idea. The outcome of enchantment is voluntary and long-lasting support that is mutually beneficial.
The greater your goals, the more you'll need to change people's hearts, minds, and actions. This is especially true if you have few resources and big competitors. Enchantment is a process, not an event. You want your efforts to endure, and this requires that people internalize your cause, reciprocate, and fulfill their commitments. Enchantment transforms situations and relationships. It converts hostility into civility. It changes skeptics and cynics into believers. When you enchant people, your goal is not to make money from them or to get them to do what you want, but to fill them with delight. This book is about touching hearts, building relationships and changing the world.

This Book Filled Me With Delight
Guy Kawasaki stated that he studied twenty books on the subjects of influence and persuasion before he wrote "Enchantment: The Art of Changing Hearts, Minds, and Actions". He listed these books in a bibliography at the end of this book. I believe the research that Mr. Kawasaki did for this book was outstanding. He gleaned the best information from these books and then added many stories from personal experiences that prove his research true. The following chapters are included in the book;
  • Why Enchantment?
  • How To Achieve Likability
  • How To Achieve Trustworthiness
  • How To Prepare
  • How To Launch
  • How To Overcome Resistance
  • How To Make Enchantment Endure
  • How To Use Push Technology
  • How To Use Pull Technology
  • How To Enchant Your Employees
  • How To Enchant Your Boss
  • How To Resist Enchantment
As you can see, most of the chapter headings begin with the words "How To". This book provides specific instructions and real-life stories about how to use "enchantment" to improve your business and your life. The principles in this book can be applied to all aspects of your life. It is time to change our focus from "what can I get from this?" to "how can I fill you with delight?" I believe this is one of the hottest books on the market today. Yes, I am enchanted!

Ms. Green is an expert article writer and has written hundreds of articles about Internet Marketing and other niche topics. How To Write Articles
The first thing to do is make a list of topics you want to write about from within your niche. The best articles are those which solve a problem or answer a question.
The 5 paragraph method of writing articles allows you to write an article that covers your subject matter in an hour or less.
  • The first paragraph begins with a statement of fact.
  • The second paragraph provides more information about the fact that you presented in the first paragraph.
  • The third paragraph is about a second focus point.
  • The fouth paragraph is about a third and final fact or focus point.
  • The fifth paragraph is the conclusion.
How To Use The Articles
Ms. Green provides details on how to distribute and monetize your articles.  She has found that article marketing is a very good way to promote affiliate products. She explains how aricles can be repurposed and reused as blog posts, reports, mini-courses, audio recordings and video recordings.

Buy The Book
This book is available as a Kindle book from Amazon.Com. The price is $5.99.  I think this is a real bargain for anyone who is interested in using article marketing to grow their business. Connie Ragen Green instructs and motivates readers to write articles and write lots of them. She is an amazing example for future internet marketers.

Internet Marketing With Connie Ragen Green

Connie Green is a natural born teacher.  She has a heart for helping others.  I found her book, Huge Profits With A Tiny List: 50 Ways To Use Relationship Marketing To Increase Your Bottom Line, full of useful information and inspiration.  Ms. Green left her job as an elementary school teacher in 2005 and has built a very successful Internet business.  I really enjoyed reading about her early experiences as an Internet marketer.  She explained that the first year was difficult and she didn't make very much money.  She invested in workshops, classes, seminars and mentoring programs to sharpen her skills.  She worked VERY hard at making her business a success.  She is now reaping the rewards of this hard work and reaching out to help others.
Huge Profits With A Tiny List provides 50 different strategies to improve your online business with an email list of prospects.  These are people who have shown an interest in your product and given you permission to market to them via email.  The emphasis is always building relationships, not selling products.  Ms. Green states that in the early days of her business, she would call a customer on the telephone and visit with them after they purchased one of her information products.  This was an excellent way to really get to know her prospects and learn how to better serve them.

Some of the stategies in the book include;
  1. Interviews
  2. Teleseminars
  3. Responding To Emails
  4. Storytelling
  5. Teaching Someone Else's Program
  6. Relate a Current Event To Your Niche
  7. Allow Your Prospects To Ask You Anything
  8. Feature And Recognize Those On Your List
At the end of the book there is a section on how to go about implementing the strategies that were taught in the book.  The author suggests that you choose 5 to 10 strategies to implement in the next 30 days.  The important thing is to work at your own pace but be diligent and determined to take ACTION.
There is a "Resources" section at the end of this book that provides links to many resources that helped Ms. Green build her business.  The author invites readers to contact her via email to let her know that you purchased the book and what you think about it.  I emailed the author and got a prompt reply.  I also received a message from Ms. Green on Twitter.  Connie Green definitely practices what she preaches.  Her business is about building relationships ~ She is the real deal!
I read this book in digital format on my Kindle

Coming Soon: I also read Article Marketing: How to Attract New Prospects, Create Products, and Increase Your Income by Connie Ragen Green. I will be posting my review of this book next week.
