Video Marketing with Animoto

Would you like to spread the word about your book, business or blog?
Is video marketing right for you?
You don't need an expensive video camera to make a video for YouTube, Facebook or Twitter.
Camera shy? You don't have to talk in front of the camera.
Today I will share a video slideshow that I made to promote/advertise this blog.

I designed the following slideshow with Animoto. I think a picture/video is worth a thousand words so I am offering this video as an example of how you can use a slideshow to tell the world about your business or product.

Book Review: Fast Media; Media Fast

My Rating: 5 Stars Out Of 5
Are you on the computer ALL the time? Are you losing nourishing connections to other people by looking at a screen all day? Have you become a consumer instead of a creator?
Fast Media; Media Fast: How To Clear your Mind and invigorate You Life in an Age of Media Overload, by Dr. Thomas W. Cooper, will help you make choices about your relationship to mass media.

About The Author
Thomas Cooper, Ph. D., is Professor of Visual and Media Arts at Emerson College and the founder of the Association for Responsible Communication which was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. This is his seventh book.

A Practical Guide To Reclaiming Your Life From Media Over Saturation
Dr. Cooper has done extensive research on the role of media in our lives. The author explains how he went on a month long "media fast" in 1989 and how it changed his life. He stopped watching television and movies, listening to radio and CDs, and reading books, magazines and newspapers. Web sites and the flurry of new media were not yet in the picture.

In the two decades which have followed, Dr. Cooper has guided and assisted thousands of students, groups and colleagues with their own media blackouts (no media), practical fasts (as little media as is practical), and media diets (selective media intake).

Dr. Cooper has studied media addiction in children and adults. The cravings for the mass media stimulus may be traced to it's instant numbing of real-life problems and the provision of emotional "highs," a sense of security, surrogate companionship, heightened sensuality and a variety of other sensations.

An entire chapter in this book is devoted to group fasting. Dr. Cooper shares his experiences in leading groups, families and classes on mass media fasts. There are specific guidelines for group leaders and some tips on how to measure the results of the fast.

My Thoughts
Most people think of food when they hear the word "fast".  Dr. Cooper has taken fasting to a new level. He shares his academic research with his readers but it is written in a manner that a layman can understand.

What would you do with your time if you had NO computer, NO television, NO movies, NO radio, NO cds or dvds, NO books, NO magazines and NO newspapers. Can you even imagine what your life would be like?

I believe the purpose of this book is to encourage you to THINK about how mass media is changing your choices and lifestyle. It is not practical for most people to eliminate all media from their lives, but perhaps it is time to take a look at our priorities.
I recommend this book to anyone who is seeking the truth in a world of "fast media".

"We adults consume more than five hours of TV and video per day while consuming four hours of Internet, not to mention music, hand-held devices, faxes, radio, movies and much more".
Dr. Thomas W. Cooper

Book Review; Scientific Advertising

Who was Claude C. Hopkins?

Claude C. Hopkins (1866-1932) was one of the great advertising pioneers, he believed advertising existed only to sell something and should be measurable and justify the results that it produced.
He worked for various advertisers, including Bissell Carpet Sweeper Company, Swift & Company and Dr. Shoop's patent medicine company. At the age of 41, he was hired by Albert Lasker owner of Lord & Thomas advertising in 1907 at a salary of $185,000 a year. Hopkins insisted copywriters researched their client products and produce reason-why copy. He believed that a good product was often its own best salesperson and as such he was a great believer in sampling.
Wowsers!  The average wage in the U.S. in 1907 was 22 Cents per hour.
The average U.S. worker made between $200 and $400 per year.
A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000 per year.
A dentist made $2,500 per year.
A veterinarian between $1,500 per year.
A mechanical engineer about $5,000 per year.

What is Scientific Advertising?

"Scientific Advertising" was written by Claude C. Hopkins in 1923 and is cited by many advertising and marketing personalities (such as David Ogilvy, Gary Halbert and Jay Abraham) as a "must-read" book.
In the book, Hopkins outlines an advertising approach based on testing and measuring. In this way losses from unsuccessful ads are kept to a safe level while gains from profitable ads are multiplied.

Here are some of my favorite quotations from this book;

One man may do business in a shed, another in a palace. That is immaterial. The great question is one’s power to get the maximum results.

Changing people’s habits is very expensive. A project which involves that must be seriously considered.

We must have a seeming advantage. People don’t quit habits without reason.

People will do much to cure trouble, but people in general will do little to prevent it.

An ad-writer, to have a chance of success, must gain full information on his subject.

We cannot go after thousands of men until we learn how to win one.

A man who desires to make an impression must stand out in some way ~ Doing admirable things in a different way gives one a great advantage.

We are attracted by sunshine, beauty, happiness, health, success. Then point the way to them, not the way out of the opposite.

Scientific Advertising was written over 80 years ago and offers very practical information that can be used today.  If you are interested in advertising and copywriting, you must read this book!
