Let The Sunshine In

I was seven years old when the first episode of The Flintstones was broadcast on television.  I loved the beginning of the show where the end-of-the-day whistle blows and Fred Flintsone yells, "Yabba Dabba Doo" and rushes home to his fammily.  Fred would walk in the door and Dino would run to greet him by knocking him to the floor and joyfully licking his face (reminds me of my dogs).  Last week marked the 50-year anniversary of the very first Flintstones episode on TV.  The show ran from September 30, 1960 to April 1, 1966.  There are many video clips of The Flintstones on YouTube, but this was my very favorite episode.  Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm were just babies and were featured on television singing,"Open Up Your Heart (And Let The Sunshine In.)"

"Open Up Your Heart (And Let The Sunshine In)" was written by Stuart Hamblen and published in 1954.  The most famous recording of this song for baby-boomers featured Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm in the "No Biz Like Show Biz" episode which originally aired September 17, 1965.  The Flintstones version of the song was stripped of some its religious lyrics for inclusion in the show. Original vocals were provided by Rebecca Page (as Pebbles) and her mother Ricky Page (as Bamm Bamm), who later became "The Bermudas" and then "The Majorettes".

I love to turn back the years and watch clips of these retro TV shows.  Did you watch the Flinstones?  Tell me about it!

  1. Janette,
We are going down memory lane. I couldn't wait to see the Flintstones on prime time television. I will never forget how they handled Wilma being pregnant and the birth of Pebbles. I was excited about the the birth.
