Kindle Books For Young Children
Several months ago, I wrote an article about children's picture books for the Kindle. I am not saying that young children should be allowed to play with a Kindle like a toy, but I believe that this is a very appropriate way for a parent to spend some time reading and showing children what an electronic book reader is all about.
Bumps In The Night is a great fit for the Kindle. Each page displays a half-page illustration and four lines of rhyming text. The text has an easy rhythmic flow and kids will love the humorous illustrations.
The illustrations are compatible with the black-and-white Kindle screen. There is very good contrast and the details are easy to see. If you want to view the illustrations in color, you can download the Kindle for PC application and read the book on your computer.
An Enchanting Book For A Great Price
I really like the way Ms. Ryther includes the entire extended family in this book. Each family member (mother, father, sister, brother, grandma, grandpa...even the family dog) is responsible for one of the strange bumps in the night. The end of the story should encourage children to talk about those "bumps" that are not so easy to explain.
I have to warn parents that your child will not let you stop at reading this book just one time. You will be reading it over and over again...especially when it is time for bed.

I recently read My First Ninety Years by Mary Jane Baird. This book was published by Murder Creek Publishing at Smashwords on August 22, 2010. I downloaded a FREE copy of this book in .mobi format and transferred it to my Kindle
to read.

This is a short memoir (approx. 3300 words) that Mrs. Baird wrote as a keepsake for her children and grandchildren. Mrs. Baird was born in Kansas City on October 10, 1919, in a home for out of wedlock mothers. She was adopted by Mary and William Murray from Kingman, Kansas. Mary grew up in Kingman along with an adopted brother who was seven years her senior.
Life in Kingman was difficult during the Depression Years, but Mary took piano lessons and was soon playing the piano for services at the family's church.
When Mary's father was 61 years old, he fell off a fire engine and broke his hip. Since her mother could not drive, young Mary was instrumental in helping her father keep up with his job's responsibilities while he was recovering. She graduated from high school and enrolled in the College of Emporia, a Presbyterian sponsored school.
During her freshman year in college, she met Bill Keesecker. They were immediately a "couple" and were engaged for five years. Bill graduated from Emporia College and then went to the McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago. Bill and Mary pastored several Presbyterian churches in the MidWest during the next 50 years. They raised three daughters and had a very happy marriage. Bill retired at the age of 70 and the Keeseckers moved to Kansas City. Rev. Keesecker died after heart surgery in 1992 and Mary moved to a retirement community. There she met Jack Baird and married him in 1995.

I wish more senior citizens would take the time to write memoirs for their friends and family to read and cherish. It is now possible for anyone to write and publish a book with very little money required. Mrs. Baird is a real inspiration to me. YES, I will write a book!
Several weeks ago my husband surprised me with a new Kindle 3 book reader. I had been hinting for a long time, but I was totally surprised when he brought it home. I had been using the Kindle for PC application for about six months and really liked it. The only problem is that I couldn't stick my laptop computer in my purse and take my books with me everywhere I went.
Well, I have a Kindle now and I can take my books everywhere I go. I am sure there are many things that this little gadget will do that I have not yet discovered but I will tell you the six things I love about my Kindle;
(1) I have access to over 700,000 thousand books from the Amazon web site.
(2) There are dozens of Kindle books available free of charge. Some of these books are the public domain books, but many modern authors are also allowing their new books to be downloaded free for a limited time. I belong to a couple of Facebook groups that feature free Kindle books each day.
(3) It is very fast. When I choose a book, it takes about 30 seconds for the name of the book to appear on my Kindle. I can choose a brand new book and be reading it the same day that it is released by the publisher. I can also pre-order books so they will arrive on my Kindle on the release date.
(4) I really like the way I can highlight key passages and add notes to my books as I read them. The really cool thing about the highlighting feature is that I can see the passages that other people have highlighted.
(5) With the wi-fi feature, I can highlight passages in my book and post them on Twitter or Facebook. Honestly, I have not used my Kindle very much to post on the web. I have been too busy reading my books.
(6) The Kindle books are reasonably priced. Most of the books are $9.99 or less and I am not charged sales tax. I don't have books piling up all over my house ~ My husband is happy about that !
I love to read books and write book reviews. The Kindle is making the task of finding good books so much easier. Three cheers for the Kindle!
